I designed a family room conversion to welcome a pair of babies into an otherwise formal home. The clients asked to turn an otherwise unused space into someplace they could hang-out, watch movies, eat meals, store stuff and pay their bills. Oh, and keep it all separate from the rest of the house.
After a few rounds of planning, we cut through the outside wall from the existing dining room, made a formal entryway with cabinetry on either side, into a dynamic landing for the new family room. A few steps lead down into a room flooded with light, and full of custom built-ins to hold the family's cds, dvds, books and tv. The soffit ceiling hides indirect lighting, HVAC, and doubles as a deep storage loft. The corner behind the built-ins is a closet which is accessed from the outside and holds ‘dirty’ items, such as bikes and surf-boards.
